Designed to help children realize their potential.
What Drives Us
Explorers’ Elementary’s goal is to provide a developmentally appropriate early elementary experience that helps children develop their creativity and problem solving abilities while also learning the necessary early academic skills.
Our curriculum utilizes a combination of educational philosophies and principles, including but not limited to Reggio Emilia’s work, Helm & Katz’s Project Approach, and Simon Nicholson’s Loose Parts theory. These philosophies all align through a more child-led and play-based approach. Together with strong literacy instruction grounded in current best literacy practices, we provide students with the foundation needed to thrive.
Project Based Learning
When students are learning or a purpose, engagement is through the roof. Students work on projects that mean something to them.
Loose Parts
Their imagination muscle will be worked daily. When items aren't rigid in their purpose, students can get creative. Whether it's in their play or working through a new concept, loose parts get them there.
Free Play
Free play is where the magic happens. Social skills don't need a designated 45 minute period when students have time to authentically engage with each other throughout the day. The benefits of free play are unmatched.
Outside
Let's brighten the senses! Our school has an amazing outdoor space that fosters climbing, gross motor skills, pretend play, and ways to interact with nature.
A Glimpse Into Our Day
01
Direct Instruction & Guided Practice
Direct instruction will be brief, focused, and extremely deliberate. It will primarily occur one-on-one or in small groups throughout the day.
- Targeted Skills
- Meets Students Where They Are
- Connected to NJ State Standards
02
Read Alouds & Discussions
One of our favorite times of the day is Read Aloud. Here we gather and relax, fulling immersing ourselves wherever the story takes us. Group discussions let us hear all perspectives and flows wherever the conversation may take us.
- Fosters strong communication skills
- Naturally strengthens reading comprehension
- Exploration of all genres
03
Projects
Student-led projects or investigations are highly encouraged and supported. Children are naturally inquisitive and we are here to help them explore their way through topics of interest. These will look as individual as our students. Investigations:
- are highly motivating and engaging
- are opportunities to connect personal experiences with their new learning
- help integrate knowledge and skills together in real-world ways
02
Play!
Free. Play. Up to our students 100%. Extended time to play is important to our kids' well being. Did you know it generally takes young children 45 minutes to get into deep play? We give them that precious time.
- Outside time prioritized in nearly all weather
- Materials for building, pretend, drawing, creating at their fingertips
- The best way to build crucial life skills
